The author of this book is Tim Vicary, He is an experienced teacher and writer in Britain.

About this story:

This is a story of Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen, and of one of the most famous and dangerous races in history. This is a race to be the first man at the South Pole, in Antarctica. In the summer of 1910, the race began.

Scott, an Englishman, left London in his ship, the Terra Nova, and began the long journey south. His team was equipped with new motor sledges and many ponies.

Fives days later, another ship named Fram also began to travel south. And on this ship was Amundsen, a Norwegian. He brought the best sledges and ninety-nine dogs.

Antarctica is known as the coldest place on earth and it is a long, hard journey over the ice to the South Pole. There is a storm often and the temperature often fall to 50 degrees below zero in winter. But all of the two teams were without fear of hardship or death, especially Amundsen’s men. They even pressed on in the bad weather.

On December 14th, Amundsen and his people arrived at the South Pole first, and he was the first man on the South Pole. A month later, Scott, Amundsen’s opponent, arrived too.

A few days later, Amundsen and his team members returned safely. But Scott and his four companions all died due to hunger and extreme cold.

P.S.

In order to let people forever commemorate their brave indomitable and aggressive performance, the United States put in the South Pole scientific station named “Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station”. On the wall, there is a line of words“My God, how terrible this place is!”, which was written by Scott in a diary in 1912.
